Greece: Forest fires on Chios island continue for third day

Large forest fires have been burning on the Aegean island of Chios for the third day. The situation remains critical: a state of emergency has been declared in the region due to the rapid spread of fires and the threat to population and infrastructure.

What’s happening:
The fires have engulfed forests, agricultural lands and coastal areas.

The wind is increasing the spread of the fires, creating new hot spots.

The fire services are working around the clock, with more than 140 firefighters, dozens of vehicles, as well as aircraft and helicopters dropping water.

Several villages have been evacuated to safe areas.

Suspected arson
The Greek Minister for the Protection of Citizens said that there are suspicions of deliberate arson. Investigative authorities are considering the possibility of a coordinated arson in several places at the same time. Locals reported seeing suspicious individuals near the forested areas several hours before the fire started.

Environmental damage:
Hundreds of hectares of forest and pastures have been burned.

Habitats of rare animal and bird species have been destroyed.

There are concerns about the long-term impact on the island’s ecosystem.

Government response:
The Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has arrived on the island to coordinate efforts.

The European Civil Protection Mechanism has offered assistance and resources.

Citizens are advised to stay indoors, avoid driving and be prepared for possible evacuation.

A local resident comments:
“This is a real nightmare. We are losing not only forests, but also our homes, our land. We cannot cope alone.”
